Any Body Been to San Francisco?

I'm going to be in San Francisco for a business conference at the end of the month. Has anyone been there? I booked my trip a day early, which wasn't actually intentional. Obviously I have a problem with travel dates ;) I have a free day on Sunday. I'd love to go to Chinatown, Fisherman's Wharf, the Golden Gate Bridge, maybe even Alcatraz. Here's the deal. I'm going alone. How safe a city is SF? Steve won't go with me because he says it's much more dangerous for a heterosexual male there than an unaccompanied female. I say he needs to broaden his horizons. Anyway, what's the best way to get around the city? Will I be safe by myself outside in the day light? Is there anywhere I "must" go? Is there anywhere I need to beware of? I arrive at 10:15 Sunday morning and fly out Wednesday at 2:55.

You must go to Alcatraz! The good news is that it's open for night tours, so you can get the rest of your sightseeing done during the day. I would suggest that you visit the website and book your tour before you go. There are several tour companies - I don't remember which one I took. It's absolutely feasible to do Chinatown, Fisherman's wharf and a cable car ride in one day. The best way to get on a cable car is to go to the turntable at the end of the line and board there - it's really hard to get on one at the stops along the route. I believe one of the lines ends a couple of blocks away from Fisherman's Wharf. Do not take a cab from the airport - take a shuttle (way cheaper). I walked a lot of places, but I can't remember whether some things were too far out to walk. I never felt unsafe during the day no matter where I was walking. Mel's Diner is a cool place to eat. Tell Steve to get over himself - he goes to Rehoboth without incident doesn't he?

Eileen,
There is nothing in San Francisco except steers and queers so you will be safe. Other than that I don't know SF. But (no pun intended) I am with Steve on this one.

Donna, I knew I could count on you, the world traveler. I'll try and give you a call before I leave and get some more pointers. Thanks!
