Merry Christmas!

And the Grinch, with his Grinch-feet ice cold in the snow, stood puzzling and puzzling, how could it be so? It came without ribbons. It came without tags. It came without packages, boxes or bags. And he puzzled and puzzled 'till his puzzler was sore. Then the Grinch thought of something he hadn't before. What if Christmas, he thought, doesn't come from a store. What if Christmas, perhaps, means a little bit more.

Topeka Light Show

So, Nalini heard about this amazing choreographed Christmas light show in Topeka on the radio and we decided to check it out.  Nalini captured the video below on her digital camera and I thought we should share.  It was a three song set and only lasted about fifteen minutes, but was truly inspiring.  What you are watching is the side of the church building.  Exciting right?  Just watch it.  Other than the narration, everything is performed live.  Each room has different performers who cannot hear the overall performance (Apparently, they take their cues from a click track).  The song in the video is We Three Kings mixed with Kashmir by Led Zeppelin.  They also performed What Child Is This by Third Day and Wizards in Winter by Trans-Siberian Orchestra.  The video is a little grainy and you are watching it through the road-salt soiled windshield of my car, but it still gives you a good idea of the performance.  As you can imagine, it was even better experienced live.  Anyway, enjoy the video.

Christmas Greetings From Germany

It's -15 C here and it has snowed everyday since we got here. Our lodge is in Garmisch-Partenkirchen. I hate the cold, but it is beautiful! We can see the Alps from our window and all around us when we're out and about. To get here we took the ferry to Belgium, and then drove the rest of the way. Rick is a true international driver now having driven in England, Scotland, Belgium and Germany.

So far we have visited Innsbruck and Dachau in Austria, and driven through Munich. Rick and Joe have tried skiing, but Julie and I opted to shop that day.

Yesterday we visited the Kris Kindle Market (Christmas Market). We had hot orange punch and cheese fondue while we shopped. Stalls are set up on the square with all kinds of things - it's very cute. This was the one in Garmisch - every town has it's own and each one is a little different.

We've also ridden the cable cars up to the top of one of the mountains, and took the train down. Well, Rick and I did - the kids opted for the train both ways.

We have two more days before we go home, getting home on Christmas Eve. Tomorrow we're going on a night tour of the Gorge, apparently complete with lighted torches. Gotta love any activity that lets you play with fire!

Rick is taking lots of pictures to share later. Hope everyone is having a merry Christmas season so far!

Christmas in New Zealand

Well, Uncle Jim thought everyone might be interested in knowing how Christmas is celebrated here in New Zealand...so here goes:

Kiwis (that's what New Zealander's are called...probably because it's easier than saying "New Zealander" and also it's after the national bird the "Kiwi")...anyway Kiwis celebrate Christmas in much the same way as we do back home, although not to the same degree. It's officially summertime here, even though it's still pretty chilly...it doesn't get dark until about half past 10 at night. In town there's probably less than 30 houses that display Christmas lights. Last night, we kept the kids up until after 11pm to take them to the one street in town that goes all out with lights. Now mummy's NOT a night owl, so this was a real treat for them!

In the stores there's decorations and Christmas carols just like back home. But, to be honest there's not the same 'festive' feel somehow. The 'cheer' is missing! OHH and Kiwis LOVE fruit cake (bleck!)

At church there'll be a primary Chrismtas presentation this week...and all the local churches have a Christmas service planned.

At home, families usually get together and have a Christmas day barbeque. Yes barbeque.
They'll also serve cold turkey (we just bought a 9 lb turkey for $40 on sale...no kidding), cold ham (so expensive we never buy any) and other cold foods.

For my part I always bring the oddities: pumpkin pie (you cannot buy pumpkin in a can here, so i always stew my own!), mom's macaroni and cheese, and cocoa loaf. For years Nathan's family tended to avoid these additions, but they're coming around.

Because it's such a different experience, it never really 'feels' like Christmas to me. So I usually try to fix a traditional Christmas dinner for my family on boxing day (that's what they call the day after Christmas) or on New years day. I need hot turkey, stuffing, mashed potatoes and gravy! We usually buy a $4 jar of Ocean Spray cranberry sauce that no one eats because it's tradition!

One thing I REALLY like about Christmas in New Zealand is that this is the time of year when most businesses (of course not retail--) have a 2-3 week break...so Nathan is always on holiday this time of year for a couple of weeks. It's also nice to have the kids home from school as this is their summer holidays.

New Zealanders are very good about remembering family time. It was only in the recent past that stores began to open on Sundays...and the ones that are open are usually only open for a half day. Businesses are closed on Easter ...except for some cafes and restaurants and the 24 hr dairies...(and fined if they're open). Even in the summer when it's light out so late, shops in town still close by 5:30 pm...and so families have time to spend together!

And that's what Christmas time is all about. Remembering the birth of our Saviour, and spending time with the people who really mean the most to us....our family.

Here's wishing you all....my family.....a safe and Merry Christmas...and Happy and healthy New Year!

love,
Sandy

Leader of the Pack

As 2009 comes to a close it gives me time to reflect on the year. I find myself in a new position in the pecking order, sadly due to Lyn's passing away, I find myself as the eldest of the siblings of Eileen and Clif Laverty's children; a position I don't take lightly. So I share some thoughts. And hopefully set the speed of the pack (I envision galloping horses).

This past year we as a family enjoyed a wonderful family reunion. Unfortunately due to several reasons not everyone could attend; they were missed. As I look over the group those who held on to the Laverty name and those through marriage have the Laverty DNA but not the last name, I see a diverse group of family, direct and extended. We all enjoy different talents, faiths, abilities, and so on. With this in mind I would like to share what we owe the Laverty name. Now this is my opinion, that I share. Agree or not these thoughts are mine and I wanted to share them with you.

First I must say, I am a Christian and a sinner. I don't always get it write, but I have grown over the years from a rebellious teenager to a responsible loving Husband and father, and a work in progress.

The Laverty name has always represented one of loyalty and solidarity, discipline, truth and character. When one is in trouble we are helpers and encourager's. We come to the aid of each other as we can.

We are not abusive to our wives, husbands and children. I more and more try to look to Ephesians 5 in the Bible. In the letter to the Ephesians Paul tells us, and I paraphrase, Wives submit to your husbands and husbands love your wives a Christ loves His Church. What a system of checks and balances that is. Pam and I always try to practise that. This eliminates a lot of needless hurt. I do admit I don't always s get it right. Husbands you are the head of the household, but remember what the Good Book teaches. If you forget pick up a bible and read it some time, you might learn something.

The L:averty's are nurturers of our children. This means loving and yes disciplining them. Not letting them see or experience some of what life can be; wife beating, child abuse, cheating, infidelity and so on. I Have tried as Jamie's dad to live up to that. He will grade me some day and I pray I get and deserve an A.

The Laverty's have always displayed a good work ethic. Doing only the best of our ability. Always doing a job worthy of signing our name to it. Punctuality, dedication to the task at hand, and respect for authority, playing well with others at work and home. This is the Laverty way.

We have differing faiths. I choose Christianity because I believe in the teachings of Jesus Christ. As stated earlier I miss the mark often, but I am getting better with time. Most of you, especially my siblings, should recognise the up hill battle I have climbed and still clime. Each day being a new day and an opportunity to grow closer to God. And an opportunity to repent of my sins.

The Laverty's, we can be prideful, pig headed, petty and sometimes down right mean, but I submit if we follow the golden Rule, hold hands and take strolls in the evening and have cookies and milk at 3:00 we will be oh so much better than all that stuff.

I set the standard high and measure myself against it. I see my accomplishments and failings and promise to do better each day. As I approach the Senior citizen days, all much too quickly I might add, I see a world changing and a family growing and life as precious and time fleeting, but I end with God's love is as time is never ending and I bid each of you my love.
Jim Laverty

Christmas

Nothing is more wonderful at this time of year than seeing Christmas again through the eyes of a 3 year old! Kyle went crazy when we turned on our outside lights!! He'll even tell you the lights are there to remind you of the lights of Jesus.
I was teaching Kyle about the reason we celebrate Christmas - the Savior's love for us etc. Then the conversation steered to this:
Grammy: Kyle, we never run out of love,
Kyle: And we never run out of hugs.
Grammy: And we never run out of kisses,
Kyle: And Grammy, we never run out of spit!

I keep telling you guys, he was coached by Daddy and Biff before he came to this earth! When Kyle added the spit comment, I could hear Daddy roaring with laughter!

Home and Happy

Pam and I arrived home last evening from Charlotte NC. By Thursday Evening 1 million Shoe boxes were processed. We were at one of 4 process centers located around the country. Last year 8 million boxes were processed and shipped for delivery to children around the world. THis year we hope to increase that number.
I can begin to tell you all how rewarding this experience was for us. We also had some down time and visited the Billy Graham Library. I was not all that interested until I arrived. It is amassing what one man has accomplished in his life time for the lord.
Well, I have to go for now but if I get a chance I will publish some pictures.

Hello from Lavertyland East

Well it is the Monday after Thanksgiving weekend. Pam and I were blessed to be able to have Thanksgiving in Crisfield on Thursday with her brother Tim. On Sunday we celebrated Thanksgiving with Jamie, Dianna and Maddie; we also had over some dear friends.
Hopefully they left with a full stomach and a smile.

We gave away just about all of our left overs as we will be going to Charlotte North Carolina for the remained of this week. We will be helping package, hopefully, thousands of shoe boxes headed for the needy. This is a part of Samaritans Purse. The shoe boxes were filled with age and gender appropriate Christmas presents for children around the country and around the world. Pray our feet don't give up on us.

Give thanks for all things both good and bad.

Love Jim

Happy Thanksgiving To All

Interestingly, even though Thanksgiving is not a British holiday, the turkey sales are pretty prevalent and the Christmas decorations are up, so it's almost like home. We started the day with a nice brisk walk downtown where we picked up a Santa suit for Joe. He's doing a charity run for St Michael's Hospice Sunday and all of the runners are wearing Santa suits.

We stopped at an outdoor cafe to get a cup of hot chocolate, and it started pouring. Rick was a good sport about it - we actually did sit and finish the hot chocolate in the wind and rain before heading home to put the turkey in the oven.

I like the ritual of preparing the turkey and the familiar side dshes (you know we'll have olives!). I always think about all of my family members preparing for the same dinner all over the world, and it connects us somehow.

For everyone out there, I wish you a glorious day spent in the company of those you love, with the knowledge that you are loved and remembered by those of us who are not there as well1

Happy Thanksgiving everyone!

Well I got my new iMac 27" quad core. Took it out of the box and in two minutes after plugging it in I was getting emails and on the internet. So far it is fast and intuitive. Some learning curve. I will repot back after I've had it a while.
Look great!!! So I guess I fit in with the young crowd.

I'm going back to school!

Hi everyone,
Just a quick update. I recently started a new job. I am taking care of a chairbound 55 year old male stroke victim. I have been taking care of Hollis for about a month now and things are going great. I am planning on starting classes in January to be a medical Assistant. The course lasts for 14 months and after graduation I will be able to get a job in a doctors office or at a hospital. Ever since we lost Mommom and Mom I have been trying to find a job that not only pays well, but is fulfilling also.
Lexie is doing great in school as always and we are still living in Laurel, DE. Bruce and I have signed a seperation agreement and will able to divorce in a year. I hope everyone is well. I love and miss you all. Have a Happy Thanksgiving!
My new address is 14183 Rottwaller Rd. Laurel, DE 19956

Feeling good

Well I'm home. After all the drama of trying to get admitted to the hospital I finally had my gallbladder ripped out by the roots. Everything went fine. I see the doctor for my follow-up visit on December the 9th. It took me a few days to get my energy back but today I feel 100% better. I still get tired if I do to much but the pain I constantly felt in my abdomen is gone.
The next step is to recover through December and then get the scar tissue in my left shoulder cut so I can get a full range of motion back, after the 1st of the year.
I'll keep everyone posted as things progress.
As far as the hospital goes, it was great. It was a private hospital. I had a private room with a private bath. If you needed pain medicine you got it in about 60 seconds after asking for it. This is compared to literally six hours in a National health hospital. When I could eat again, dinner consisted of hot tea followed by creme of mushroom soup, roast lamb with mint sauce and five scoops of lemon sorbet for desert. Since I missed my lunch of chicken salad and tea because I was in surgery, they brought me that too along with my dinner. At 1:00am after my surgery the nurse came in, saw that I was still awake and brought me a tray of hot tea.
It was great as far as hospitals go. The girl who helped me get my insurance approval even came up to my room to make sure everything went well.
That's about it for now.
Cheers!

Rick's Tales from the Front

As many of you know, Rick has been battling the hospital and the insurance company to get his gall bladder operation scheduled. Because he's going through a private hospital, not NHS (National Health Service), and because they can, the hospital wanted payment up front. They would accept a guarantee of payment from the insurance company, but the insurance company would not provide a guarantee of payment until he was admitted, and the hospital would not admit him until they got a guarantee. Classic catch-22.

So how to come up with 9,000.00? We went down several roads, and eventually got a loan, freeing him for surgery. We signed the papers, and called the hospital to see how they wanted the check made out and who to deliver it to.

Surprise! They had worked things out with the insurance company!

So we are good to go. No out of pocket for now, and pleased to know that our signature alone can buy us at least 9,000.00 on any given day.

Surgery tomorrow!

I am considering switching to an iMac. I am looking particularly at the 27" with a dual quad processor. You can see it at www.apple.com If you have any knowledge of this computer or any apple computer please give me your thoughts. Email addresses, contact information etc. will stay the same.
Thanks in advance for your feed back.

James Sr is HOME

Ok, my dad is home from the hospital and doing ok. He probably has a viral infection or possibly a mild influenza, they really are not sure. They ran several tests Saturday and again today - Monday. All seems well and although he was dehydrated when he went in, he is doing well now.

Thank you to everyone who prayed and shared your concerns. Jim, he laughed when I told him you need some carpentry work done... He appreciated all the comments.

Saturday was a little scary, but all is well.

Happy Birthday Hughbert

Gettin' older and prettier

I'm not Joe Biden

But I am Vice President...of Real Estate and Retail Services that is.  Thought I'd take a moment and share a little good news with everyone.  Last Monday I was called to the big guy's office.  I was a little unnerved as he said it was for an HR talk.  Oh great!  Who did I offend this time with my Laverty mouth, right?  Well it seems our corporate office is a mess.  I already knew that, but hey, not my department, not my problem...until now.  I now have the responsibilities of managing the real estate department and all retail services.  That means going from a staff of 4 to having 28 reports.  A little overwhelming, but I've kind of got a reputation as the fix it and clean up girl at the credit union.  I'd said I was ready for a new challenge; well, now I've got one.

James Sr is in the hospital

Hi,

just wanted to inform everyone and ask for prayer for my dad as he went into the hospital today as he had trouble getting out of bed, 102 degree fever and overall pain Saturday morning. They did a CT scan, spinal tap, blood tests, chest x-rays amongst routine tests. They don't have all the results back yet, and they decided to keep him overnight. He could be there one, two or three days but they will make those decision daily as they try to figure out what is wrong.

They are concerned about influenza - could be any type, pneumonia or meningitis.

Please pray with us and I will updat you as we know what is happening.

Thank you and be blessed by God!

Jimmy

Next Family Reunion

Hello to the whole Laverty Gang!

I have been thinking about the next Family Reunion. A while ago Eileen asked who would step up to the plate to coordinate the next one and I said I am willing, and although I have not heard anything either way, I decided to get the ball rolling.

I guess we need to start by choosing a place and based on the responses about time - I think two years was acceptable to all. so why don't we try this. So there are two questions we need to start with:
1. When - is Agust 2011 a good time to shoot for? Is July or another month preffered?

2. Where would you like to reunion?

At this point all suggestions are open and close to two years to save, we hope to have everyone there. One suggestion is open a Reunion Savings Account and if you put even a few bucks aside each month you could have enough for your family to attend.

Well that's a start. I look forward to the next reunion even if it seems to be a long way off.
Your opinion counts so don't delay on your response. And at this point if you have two suggestions or your spouse's idea is different than yours, by all means post both ideas. We will narrow it down afterwords.

If you have a great idea and have a link to their website - send that along too. And if ou have a particular experience at one of yor suggested places, write about it so everyone can see.

That's all for now.

A Joke from James E.

The Goat

Two rednecks are out hunting, and as they are walking along they come upon a huge hole in the ground. They approach it and are amazed by the size of it. The first hunter says "Wow, that's some hole, I can't even see the bottom, I wonder how deep it is?"The second hunter says "I don't know, let's throw something down and listen and see how long it takes to hit bottom. The first hunter says "There's this old transmission here, give me a hand and we'll throw it in and see".So they pick it up and carry it over, and count One, and two and three, and throw it in the hole.
They are standing there listening and looking over the edge and they hear a rustling in the brush behind them. As they turn around they see a goat come crashing through the brush, run up to the hole with no hesitation, and jump in headfirst.
While they are standing there looking at each other and trying to figure out what that was all about, an old farmer walks up. "Say there", says the farmer,"you fellers didn't happen to see my goat around here anywhere, did you?"The first hunter says " Funny you should ask, but we were just standing here a minute ago and a goat came running out of the bushes doin' about a hunert miles an hour and jumped headfirst into this hole here!"
And the old farmer said "Why that's impossible, I had him chained to a transmission."

Wow

I can't help but write about what a great family we have. I love you all.

Deja Vu, Vu

That's right - back into the hospital. Still waiting for the ultrasound, but I think he'll be back home tomorrow. It's so sad - he's gotten to the point where he calls a cab to take him to the hospital and back home, so I don't miss work every 4 or 5 days. He'll probably start keeping a hospital bag packed next, just like the expectant moms.

Why don't they just take the gall bladder out!

What a month!

Hi everybody, I've been going through some rough spots lately and I haven't had many positive things to write about. I'm still living in Moorhead, Minnesota. My wife and I are going through some tough times. The construction season is over so I've been working for jobs-a-day. That kind of stinks but it is money. I haven't lost my faith though. God is the strongest influence in my life and He's carrying me right now. I met two young guys a couple months ago and now they meet me at church on Sundays. I don't remember the last time that I thought I did something that is actually good for someone. I'm not expressing myself in type very well so you will have to excuse me. I'm bummed out about missing the reunion. God willing we will be there for the next. I love you all. I didn't realize that there were so many wonderful people in my family and if Mom passing did anything good it was getting us all together. If you have any room in your prayers, I could use just a little. =-)

He's Home!

Rick is back home. Nothing new to report - he still has to wait awhile to get the gall bladder out. Hopefully, he won't have another flare-up.

Christmas is Coming

Hey All! As you probably know, I really do enjoy photography. I actually have had an interest since about age 10. Well I finally decided to do something a little extra with some of my photos. I make photo greeting cards using photography from all over the place - US, Canada and Brazil for now. Actually I have been making my cards since 2006.

For the past month I have been working on setting up a new website with these cards. I would love some feedback on what you think, and of course if you would like to place an order I wouldn't mind at all. But take a look at my site and the cards and if you have any suggestions or comments, send them my way.

My cards are hosted on a site specifically for hand crafted items, called Etsy. I will be uploading more cards as time goes on. I have many more cards available than I have on the site. You can click the title above or go to www.photocardsbyjimmy.com

Have a wonderful week and be blessed!

Tony needs prayer!

I just received an email telling me that Tony had a bicycle accident. He was on his way to a 7-11 and failed to negotiate a down hill turn, when his bike flipped. He hit his face on the ground and has several stitches, may need plastic surgery. He also broke out 3 of 4 teeth he had in an upper bridge in the front of his mouth. He will go to the dentist once the stitches have been removed and the swelling goes down. Thank God he did not have any more head injury.

Aunt Roberta has asked for our prayers that the complete Will of our Lord would be manifest in and for his life. It would be nice if Tony could be moved in with a couple suited to taking care of people with head injuries or a ranch setting, as he is very good with horses and finds joy in them.

I will ad this request that we pray for Uncle Jim and Aunt Roberta as they try and help Tony...it has been a hard journey for them, but it goes with out saying that they do it out of love.

Love, Jim

Deja Vu

Rick is back in the hospital with what he thinks is another pancreatitis attack. He's on the same ward. They haven't limited his diet as much yet as the blood work was in the normal range. Don't have any word yet on next steps - maybe they'll know tomorrow.

Saturday, October 24, 2009

Hi everybody

I just got back to a computer and I figured I'd let you all know I'm here. I'm alright and I miss you all. I'm moving soon and I'll let you know my new address when I get a chance. I love you guys. I'll talk to you all soon.

Good News from the Doc!

It looks like the problem with my lead corrected itself.  Dr. Val in his best American/Chilean said that my heart was angry, but now the leads have found a home.  Evidently, the heart doesn't like foreign objects being inserted into them.  They rebel and get inflamed and try to cause the lead to back out.  It just took a while for the heart to settle down and accept that this is pretty much a permanent arrangement. That little adventure used up a little over a year of my battery life, but all in all, that's not a huge deal.  Right now they're projecting 7 years or so before I'd need a new pacemaker.  Somehow that sounds a long way away.  A lot longer than, "Hey, next month we're going to extract your lead and start over again."  I can live with that...pun intended.

Homecoming Dance

In an unexpected move, both children went to the homecoming dance. Most kids went in groups not with dates, so almost everyone goes. And dresses up. Julie is in several pictures nad Joe is in a couple. I think it's fun to see the dresses. Here's the link - just paste into your browser..

obama and hid dad

Obama and his dad were taking a leak off the 14Th street bridge. His Dad says "boy dis water's cold". Obama says "yea it's deep too".
Then they smoked some crack with Marion Barry and Got Their Freak on. Jessie Jackson didn't want any because he couldn't be given a guarantee that the crack hadn't been purchased in"Hymie Town".

Hey There

So whats up? Notice the counter on the blog over 900 views since I put it on but no where near that many posts.

Let me tell you a story. I have a client she is a CPA, she sends me many new clients which adds to the commission statement thus making my banker happy. It was her birthday so I sent her Flowers. Her business is attached to her home so she put them on the dinning room table. Her husband saw her and beat her up for getting these flowers from someone other than him. So she went to the emergency room and had stitches and turned them in on her health insurance, note I am her insurance agent, so the insurance company paid the claim so her rates went up. With that her husband again beat her up for turning in the claim and causing the premium increase. So he the flew out the front door tearing the screen door. Later that evening a customer came over and cut his hand on the screen, so he turned that claim into my clients home owners policy which paid the claim under "medical payments to others". So her premium on her home owners insurance went up, so her husband beat her up again. So she called Obama's office to tell him about it and his recommendation was to take enough pain medicine until her ultimate and untimely death. So I then paid the life insurance claim one claim per policy its simple and now the husband had money but no one to beat up. So he called Fox News and it was reported on Glen Becks program. Now the Obama administration has band all flowers and taxed the florist out of business. Then blamed Glen Beck for the entire situation.
The moral of the story is Obama's going to get you either by taxes or death.
The names were changed in the previous account to protect the innocent.
Now you have the rest of the story, have a good day.

I'm home

After seven days and approx 104 needle sticks in my arms and legs, I'm finally home. There's a lot to tell and I'll fill more in tomorrow when I'm not so tired, but I'm home. It took them 11 hours just to get me discharged. Never, ever do you want to get pancreatitis. It's the worst pain I have ever experienced and I've experienced a lot of pain. I fill you in later.
P.S. Beds from the Florence Nightengale error are really uncomfortable.

The Latest Update

Rick is trying desperately to get out of the hospital and they are trying just as desperately to keep him in. Just as he was ready to have them sign the release papers, they found out his potassium was low. After several hours of promises and a threatened walk-out, they hooked him up to a potassium drip and he whiled away another night in Littondale Ward. This morning it's still low, but I don't know if it's low but better, or no change. If it's low but better, then just give him potassium pills and send him home!

He is angry and frustrated at this point - not a good combination. Hopefully, by the time you read this, Rick will be home and preparing to fire off an angry letter to the NHS.

Good news/Bad News

The results of the scan don't show anything going on with the gall bladder. The good news is that they still think it could be related, so they are going to recommend he get the gall bladder out as an outpatient when this is over.

So with no real culprit, they keep him in until it's back to normal - mid to end of week, and send him home.

I still think it probably was the gall bladder though, so at least he'll be able to get it removed as a result of this.

Update on Rick

Sorry guys, but it's kind of difficult to juggle a husband in the hospital, all the usual weekend errands, two cross country events, a birthday party and the blog.

But enough whining, you guys just want to know what's going on.

Rick was in a lot of pain, but they've finally gotten his meds right and he was much better today. They are doing a CT scan tonight. The most likely cause is gallstones, which I pretty much hope it is, as they could then get the gall bladder out and problem solved.

If it's not the gall bladder, it's a mystery and they probably just get this attack under control and wait to see if it happens again - not a pretty prospect.

In any event, he'll be in the hospital until mid-week at least. He doesn't want any phone calls right now - he can't concentrate and doesn't feel like working to carry on a conversation. I'll let you know if he changes his mind.

Jim - he did say that if you wait a couple of weeks he can tell you a lot about the NHS now!

Anything New on Rick?

Hey Donna,  Any update on Rick?  Have the Doc's decided if this is caused by his gall bladder?  Just want to know what's going on.  Eileen

Rest in Peace Brenda

If you guys could please pray for my step family. My step sister Brenda Cottit passed away yesterday of brain cancer. She was diagnosed with stomach cancer less than a year ago and the cancer spread to her brain. She was undergoing chemo and lost the battle.
Love to you all.

Rick's latest diagnosis

Rick checked himself into the emergency room this morning after being sick for the last two days. I suspect he was thinking swine flu, but it came back pancreatitis - an inflammation of the pancreas. Very painful. He is now on a ward at Harrogate Hospital. We are going over to see him in about an hour. He'll be in the hospital for a few days, as the pancreas needs to rest which means no food for the next 3 or 4 days. I'll post a phone number in case anyone wants it, but it will be an international number. It doesn't sound serious, he just needs to be in the hospital so he can be hooked up to the IV. Researching, it looks like that pesky gall bladder could be the cause of the mischief, but as of right now, no clue.

Happy Anniversary

Yes Happy Anniversary; Something I say with mixed emotion. Today is the day that Mom and Dad married. A day to celebrate. This union brought 7 children into this world, Lyn, Jim, Deb, Bif, Eileen, Rick and Tim, which in turn brought 12 grandchildren and now a fourth generation of kids. It would take too long to list each of the 7 siblings by all the nick names so I won't bore you but you will probably remember most. Feel free to list what you remember in comments.

With this remembrance there were many times of joy, laughter, love and yes pain. The obvious one today is the death of our father, on this day, his wedding anniversary. There have been other losses none less harmful than the other but a hurt that touched each of us at many levels; some deeper than others or different than others, but no one greater than other.

It's a sad day for me but I have to give thanks and remember the good in each of them. No one had a wink of the eye like dad.; could break a "Fuller Hair Brush" like mom, a vocabulary like Lyn, a smile like Tim or the fearlessness of Bif. Yep it is a time to remember the joy.

The good news is we are all going to join them one day. Jesus said "In my Fathers house are many mansions". I look forward to the time our family can all come together in a house provided by God and to think it will not be a three bedroom one bath rancher, LOL. We will not be lined up at the bathroom door at eight o'clock to go to bed. Dad will not have to lay brick and do odd jobs to feed us and thank God mom will not have a Fuller Brush nor a stove to resurrect. Now don't get too theological on me, but new bodies are promised, boy am I ready for that!!!!

So you see we have good, bad, funny memories to hold onto and we can choose to cry or smile with the expectation of times to come. Although sometimes hard to smile, today I choose to do just that and I hope you will too.

With Loving memories,
Jim

PS I am glad that poor grammar and bad spelling is not a sin........Other wise mom would make me go to bed at 7:00 for a month of summer and my sisters would not let her forget. Do you think we will have to go to bed in Heaven?

I don't like spiders and snakes

Now the snakes are not a problem. They are all hanging out by rivers and woods and places I don't wander around that often. The spiders on the other hand, consider September to be the month they move indoors. Some would say it's them moving into a warmer place for the winter, but it is 70 - 80 here these past two weeks, and the spiders are trooping in like they own the place. Get them a collar and a leash and these guys could be your second dog - they are big!

Oh I know they're harmless - these are second cousins of the daddy longlegs. But I don't like them. In fact, I am afraid of them on some deep, visceral level that leads me to scream whenever I see them scurrying across the floor. At least the rest of the family is accommodating. They immediately leap into spider killing mode. (No lectures please - I really don't care about all the good stuff they do. If they would stay out of my house, I would let them live a long and happy life. I do not bother them in their house, they shouldn't bother me in mine!)

Happily, it's pretty much all over by October, November at the latest. They disappear. I don't trouble myself wondering where they're camping because they don't venture into sight. As it should be.

What critters are heading your way these days?

Debbie is Home!

Debbie asked me to let everyone know she is doing well and is out of the hospital as of 2pm today. She is walking and moving around on her own. She is doing very well or the doctors would not have released her from the hospital today. She is going to have a lot of aches and pains for a while but that is to be expected. We have only been home for a short while and she is already complaining about being bored. I guess my tap dancing isn't very good or entertaining.

Update on Debbie

Barry called and Debbie is in recovery. The surgery actually took 3 1/2 hours, but the doctor assured him that was normal. Doc said the fusion went well and was very positive about the procedure. Barry asked that I post this to get the good word out. He will update later, I'm guessing this evening, when he can get to a computer.

A word from me...so, can we give it a rest now? As Mom always said, "Things happen in threes". We've fulfilled our commitment in the last 5 weeks, so no more!

I'm home!

They turned me loose at 6:30 tonight. Everything went well. I'm a little sore but other than that everything is cool.

Okay, my turn

My check in time tomorrow is 6:15 am and my surgery is at 8:30. It will take 2-3 hours with an hour in recovery. Please pray for me. I've received a priesthood blessing and I'm sure I'll be fine but I'm as nervous as a kitten. The recovery is going to be long and hard. 6 weeks to 3 months in the brace and NO bending for at least 6 weeks, and they mean NO BENDING! Didn't anyone tell them how good I am at dropping things!!!!!!!

Takes a licking, but keeps on ticking

That's Rick. His surgery went fine. They must have put some new-fangled pacemaker in, because he came out and ate yogurt for lunch voluntarily. He is currently zoning out with his ipod and watching very bad British TV. Because any TV is better than no TV.

Monday, August 24, 2009

pacemaker procedure

After checking in and spending 2 1/2 hours in the hospital, my procedure was canceled and rescheduled for tomorrow at 8:00 am. The technician had to "go home".
So, I'll update everyone tomorrow.

It's Friday!!!!!!!!

Well for you working folk "It's Friday" is a good thing, but remember Sunday is Coming.

With that said it has been a busy week. I just caught my breath and thought I would solicit some input from you all. First I hope everyone returned safely and had a good time at the Reunion. Notice I did not say Branson. Nothing wrong with Branson in fact it is great!!!!! But the most important thing is Family and the Reunion was all about family. Yes it was vacation time for some and just off times for others, but it was all family. Someone said 7 days in the same house and we are still speaking, that was said kind of tongue in cheek but it does say allot about "A Gathering of Misguided Crazy Folks that Share the Same DNA and Love Each Other in spite of themselves" kind of clan.

Now that I am done pontificating let me ask some questions; Would you like to do this again? If so when? (understanding the expense and all) Would Branson be your next choice? If not what would be your suggestion? What was the thing you enjoyed the most and what could you do with out? Would you like more or less organized activities like the trip to Silver Dollar City or planned meals?

It would be great if I could get a comment from all who attended and those that did/could not make it this time.

Thanks to all,
Jim

Cocoa Loaf for Jason

Jason asked for the cocoa loaf recipe - so here it is like I promised! It was passed on in the family from Nan Laverty (Mildred Evelyn Helmuth Laverty) our Grandmother and great grandmother to Bethany on our Dad's side.

Cocoa Loaf

1 cup sugar 1 cup cold water 1 cup raisins 1/2 cup crisco 2 large tbsp cocoa 1/2 tsp ground cloves 1 tsp cinnamon 1 tsp salt

Boil above together for 5 mins. Stir continuously so as not to scorch. Cool. Sift 2 scant cups of flour add to above. Put 1 tsp baking soda in 1/4 cup hot water and add. Mix well. Grease and flour lightly two med. pans or 1 large. Bake in loaf pan 45 min at 350* I use two smaller pans as it goes further and doesn't have as much tendancy to fall.

This is the recipe as Nan wrote it. HOWEVER, times have changed!!!!!
Flour is pre-sifted today, so don't sift your flour. Use 2 cups of flour loosely packed. Also, you should use Dutch Process Cocoa powder. I have a hard time finding it so I use 1 rounded tablespoon of Dark Chocolate powder and 1 rounded tablespoon regular cocoa powder. I don't use crisco, I just use liquid canola oil and it actually works better.
Don't overcook in the oven. No one likes cocoa loaf dried out but everyone likes it when the middle falls. It falls quite often and cooks up best on a humid day but don't let that discourage or stop you from making it! It is delicious and the house smells scrumptuous while the first step is being cooked on the stove.

Hi everyone, allow me to introduce myself. My name is Tammy and I am Lacey's friend and also Bella's Aunt. It's nice to finally meet everyone I feel like I already know you all from the wonderful things Lacey has told me about everyone. I was speaking with Jim yesterday about Bella's condition and told him I would gladly post some photos of Lacey and Bella and keep everyone updated on how they are doing.

For those of you that don't know whats been going on I will start from the beginning.

About 6 days ago Lacey had to rush Bella to Salisbury hospital she was vommitting blood.

The doctors ran several tests and sent them home, later the doctor called to check on Bella and asked a few questions. From the questions he asked he felt the need to admit her for more tests. They went back to the hospital and ran more tests, they found that she had blood in her stools as well. They did a upper gi and blood work to. They have diagnosed her with several reflux which can be treated with medication. After 2 days in Salisbury they transported them by ambulance to Johns Hopkins. She has been there for the past 4 days and they have ran many tests including the scope down her throat. They noticed the lining of her stomach had several spots on it and also where her stomach and esophogus meet isn't the way it should be. Its loose which could be the cause of her reflux. She has been hooked up to iv's, a cath, and something to monitor her heart I believe. She has a heart mumor

The test results are in. At this time I'm not diabetic. I am and have been for years hypoglycemic. The doctor says I am however very sweet.
Still no trace of my luggage!

We made it

Joe and I met at Dullas and flew all night. Got caught in a traffic jam 15 minutes from home after a 1 hr. 45 min ride and spent an extra 1/2 hour in the cab. Now if they can find my luggage I'll call it a day. Hope everyone made it home o.k.

Last Day before we leave for Branson

Well Tomorrow it all starts ...A week with the Laverty's. I pray everyone has an enjoyable and safe trip.

As I think of our getting together and how much fun it will be, I can't help but think of Mom, Dad, Lyn, Biff and Tim not being with us anymore. I know how each of them would have enjoyed the camaraderie and excitement of children, grandchildren and Great grandchildren, nieces, nephews and cousins, in-laws and out-laws as well. What a bunch will be there. Sounds like an episode of "The Walton's".

As I think of each and what they would be doing I can't help but think Mom would head up the kitchen, cleaning and "resurrecting the stove " before we check out next week. Dad would surly be at the Dixie Stampede. Lyn curled up with a book somewhere and Biff taking all the risks and dare devil adventures he could pack in. Timmy would be off playing music and presenting that great smile he had.

One day we will all rejoin as the song says and the circle will be unbroken. What a day that will be.

Now I don't know exactly what I will be doing; shooting sporting clays, Silver Dollar City is in my plans (some kids never grow up) maybe a couple lunches and dinners out and a show. But most of all taking it easy. I will report on that when next I get on the blog.

I hope Jimmy and I can post some pictures while we are in Branson. I don't hold a candle to his photographic abilities but I have fun with my camera. I will do my best to get Rick off and get him in trouble and antagonize Debby and Eileen, what is an older brother to do?

To all who can't attend we will miss you terribly and hope that we can share our joy through the Laverty Family Blog.

This is just one of the many James Laverty's saying God Bless you all!

see ya tomorrow

Barry and I will be heading out in the morning. (SAT) We'll do our best to make it in one day - it depends on my back. So we'll see you all very soon! Everyone be careful and stay safe!

On our way

Hello to all!!! Friday morning we will be heading out - my dad, Tony (my nephew) and myself. Mom will work until noon and meet us in great state of Kansas (great meaning great BIG, long, never-ending... hehehe). We will stop over night in Topeka and Saturday will have 5 hours drive time to arrive in Branson. I am excited!

We are taking two cars as mom has to return to work on Wednesday and the plain flights were as long as driving and she preffers to drive. Soooo, we will see everyone on Saturday or Sunday depending on when y'all get there.

That's all. Have a safe and good trip and we will see you soon. Be blessed! Jimmy

Hi Everybody!

Hi Family! It's been a very long time since I've written. A lot has happened, some good, some not so good. I've been working for Habitat for Humanity at their hardware-type store. It's been a lot of fun and very rewarding. I've volunteered at a couple houses and met the families that are getting the homes.

My time there is up now and I'm looking forward to welding school. I'll be starting welding training in three weeks. Hopefully there will be job opportunities when I finish.

I am starting a new job tomorrow. I will be testing and refilling fire extinguishers. It's a small business and I'm not sure what the pay is yet but it's work for now.

I'm actually volunteering right now so I had better log off. I love you guys. I miss you all and I hope you're doing well.

Location in Branson

Well I just found out the resort we are staying at is 45 minutes from teh house the rest of teh family is staying at. We can have as many guests over during the day to use the pool - very nice pool (getting out of the heat Debbie) or for whatever else.

Now a question - are we all meeting at a particular time on Sat or Sun? Is there a plan or are we just going to do that when we all arrive in Branson?

Staying longer

Here's the deal. Due to financial opportunities here vs. opportunities in the states, and due to continuing health concerns, Donna and I have decided to accept another position for her with the Department of Defense. Because of this we will not be returning to the states until July of 2013. If any one wants to take advantage of our hospitality and visit England or use this place as a stop over to hop around Europe, you are certainly welcome to do so.
If not we'll see in four years.

Happy Birthday Mike (Hipps)

Happy 28th birthday little brother!

Love,
Sandy

ok ok...so here's a few of the kids' latest funnies

I've been teaching the kids to pray...yes I know it's a long time coming. When I asked Shaun to ask God to "bless us to have a good night's sleep"...Shaun said, "mum what does 'bless' mean?"
I told him "bless means when God gives us a gift". "Oh" Shaun said, "I'm gonna ask God for lots of gifts". I went on to explain that it wasn't quite like that. If we asked God to give us a good night sleep, and we have a good night sleep, then that was the gift God gave us. I told Shaun I asked God to give me a baby, and God gave me Shaun and Zoe, so they were gifts God gave me. "Oh, did I come in a box Mum?", "No, you came in my tummy". Shaun went on, "Mum, how did God put me in your tummy?" Oh boy, 5 years old and I'm having to tell him about the birds and the bees..lol Sooooo I told him "a mummy has an egg, and a daddy has sperm and when a mummy and daddy love each other VERY much the egg and the sperm come together and a baby grows in mummy's tummy...and God helps all that happen"....phew that seemed to satisfy his curiousity! I was beginning to think I'd NEVER get out of that one!

Luckily Zoe's easier...she just asks for "Makeup syrup" on her pancakes!

Smile everyone...lots of love,
Sandy

YO YO YO Where's the younger generation?

Hey, where are all the cousins, grandkids? Us old folks need a break!!!! Anyway, how about a little uplifting humor for a change? So here I go with out of the mouth of babes:
Aaron, 5, wanted a second ice cream sandwich. Instead of asking for one as he headed to the freezer he said to me: " I'm getting another ice cream. I'm old enough to make these decisions for myself!"
Aaron and Kyle were waiting for Mom and Dad, (Lisa and Mike), to come pick them up. Kyle,3, wasn't happy with me because I had cut them off from playing Mario Kart. I asked Kyle for a kiss and he said to me "Grammy, you're wasting my time!" He meant "your" time. Grammy definitely got the message. By the way, Grammy DID get her kiss!!

Okay, it's your turn! Come on Sandy, Mike, Treena, Johnny, Bethany - my kids - I KNOW your kids have lots to say and do!!!

Love,
Aunt Debbie

Bionic Babe

Okay, so here's the deal...for those who know and those who don't, I had my clock reworked this past Monday. I had a dual chamber pacemaker implanted. I guess I'd really been kind of sick for a while and just didn't realize it, or didn't want to recognize it. At any rate, I've been pretty sore this last week. I just about freaked when I saw what my chest looks like and finally shed a few tears over it all. I'm sure it will get better and I'm doing better this evening. Steve insisted I go see a comedy with him and being the wise sage that he is, it worked. I laughed so hard I think I embarrassed him! I've checked by blood pressure and pulse a couple of times this weekend and wouldn't you know it? I'm beating a steady 60 BPM. I think when I go back to see the doc I'm going to ask him to kick it up a notch to 65 or 70. The heart palpitations have decreased dramatically. I do feel light headed occasionally, but the doc says my heart and pacemaker need to get used to each other. I guess it's a teamwork kind of thing. For future reference when you're asked about family history, I have Sick Sinus Syndrome and SA Exit Block. Rick has SSS as well. My doctor said my sinus node just aged faster than the rest of me. Is that supposed to make me feel better? I keep saying I'm not an old lady, I'm a Bionic Babe!

I can see clearly now...

Update on today's activities

I had the EP Study on my heart today, and I'm happy to report that the doctor found all the circuitry in my heart is fine. He said "you will not die." Did I tell you about this doc's bedside manner? The problem is in the sinus node and the pacemaker will take care of that. I will say this test has left me feeling pretty washed out. I was in twilight sleep during the procedure, so I don't remember most of it. Maybe making your heart race makes you as tired as a real race! Afterward, it was kind of interesting. First, my heart was beating normally and at a good pace. After a while, my heart started to speed up and my blood pressure went way down. They got that under control, but I think that coupled with the drugs are why I feel kind of crappy. The good news is that when my heart was beating normally, I felt pretty good. Another sign and another reason why I am hopeful the the pacemaker will make me a new woman! I don't have a date yet, but it looks like sometime during the week of the 20th. I should have no problem at the reunion and will probably leave you all in the dust when we hike the mountains!

Wednesday, July 8, 2009

diagnosis

O.K. I saw the Dr. tonight. I have something called "sick sinus syndrome". My heart rate is pumping around 30 to 50 beats per minute. So after the reunion I will be having a pacemaker put in. I'll fill in all the finer details when I'm in Branson. Good night and Good luck.

Dr appointment

My appointment with the heart Dr. was moved till 07/08/09.I'll let ya'll know what I find out then.

Have you ever had just one of those perfect days?

Typically on the 4th of July we have a family BBQ and enjoy the fireworks. This year there was a bit of a twist. Thursday evening, actually, Friday morning at about 12:30 AM, the hallway light came on. In my deep slumber and sort of deep aggrivation, I thought, "Come on Eric, it's the middle of the night, what are you doing?" Eric will raid the fridge in the middle of the night, but the hallway leads pretty much nowhere but our bedroom and I couldn't imagine why he would even be in the hall. All of a sudden Steve says, "Get up Eileen, I want you to see something." Normally, I would have said, " What? It's the middle of the night, leave me alone!" But, for some reason I was actually a nice wife and said "Okay" and I got up out of bed. There in the hallway stood Hannah! She had driven up from Texas to see us. Evidently, she and Bethany had conspired to surprise me. Hannah and Steve were actually texting back and forth Thursday evening while we were watching TV. I thought he was just playing with his new phone! Anyway, Bethany had arranged a big family BBQ at our house for the 4th, today. Josh grilled pork chops, steaks, chicken, and brats. All the kids brought sides. The orders were that Steve and I were to do nothing but enjoy, and enjoy we did. I can't soak in the pool for a few more days, so Grandpa Steve took up the slack and played with all the grandkids in the water. It was really heartwarming to see. I can't tell you how special it was to see our very grown children acting so grown up. The only one missing was Nalini as she had to work. We missed her, but I know she would have been here if she could have. All the kids have headed elsewhere now. Steve and I are out on the back deck with Tybee waiting for the fireworks to start. That's what I call "Just one of those perfect days."

Happy 4th of July!

Like most people, we more fully appreciate something when we don't have it, or when it becomes more difficult to get it. Obviously, the 4th is not a universally celebrated holiday. You might think celebrating in Britain might be a tad politically incorrect, but celebrate it we do - on the 27th of June. The odd date is intended to minimize the disruption of the 4th of July protests held outside the base each year, attracting (I'm told - haven't actually seen them) several hundred protesters. Realistically, this probably means less than 100, and it's a scheduled, peaceful event, they just get in the way of the folks going in and out of the base.

Which would have been a bigger problem than usual this year as we had over 2500 guests ((Brits)) in attendance at our celebration. As it turns out, everyone loves a party. There were rides, games, hot dogs and hamburgers, a soap box derby, musical entertainment and, of course, fireworks. It was fairly warm for change too - no winter coat needed this year.

For added fun, we took a trip down south today to one of our sister bases where they hold their 4th of July on the 4th of July (how odd!). We got another dose of funnel cake and hot dogs before heading back home.

Now we're sitting here listening as fireworks are going off somewhere out there - maybe it's our British neighbors celebrating "Thanksgiving".

My 2008 Raider

This is my ride. I have just added new chrome wheel, chrome sprocket, chrome brake rotors and a larger real tire. I hope you enjoy as much as I do. This was my 4th of July.

Out of the Mouths of Babes...

Some days the kids really make me laugh...here's a couple of the most recent times...

Shaun-- was taking a bath and turned on the hot tap. He filled a cup with hot water then poured it down the front of him..."MUM! I burned my tennis balls!"
After making sure he wasn't scalded I burst out laughing "you mean testicles buddy?"
"Yeah, tennis balls"..

Zoe-- got a colouring in picture, one of the ones stores give away as an entry to a competition for the kids to colour so they can hang it up in the shop. Anyway this one had pictures of teddy bears all over it. Zoe coloured it in beautifully, then with a red pen she drew a penis on one of the bears. "And here's his penis Mum". ...horrified I said "Zoe, don't draw a penis on the teddy bear."........"Why not Mum? It's the boy one.".........of course it was.
Who can argue with innocent logic like that???

Hope all is well with everyone!

Happy Birthday Macy!

Happy 3rd Birthday Little One!

Today is Mike's (Hipps) youngest's birthday!

Lots of love to you baby,
Auntie Sandy

What are you doing next summer?

Well, it's official...Philip and Nalini are engaged! The ring is almost as beautiful as Nalini is and looks just perfect on her finger. They actually haven't set a date yet, but it sounds like times next summer are being discussed. I cannot tell you how very, very pleased I am about this. These two people are so well suited to each other. Both have the most giving, loving hearts. Both are super intelligent and childlike at the same time. They are just a pleasure to be around. Nalini has "just fit" from the moment we met her. Of-course she makes it easy to fit in because, for whatever reason, she seems to genuinely love this crazy family. I know I love her very much and can't wait to call her my daughter.

Where were you?

Most people will never forget where they were when JFK was assassinated or when the World Trade Center was attacked. So be prepared when people ask you, "where were you when you heard Michael Jackson had become fertilizer"?

Finally made it

Well I finally figured out how to get on here and wanted to take the opportunity to say thank you so much to everyone for welcoming me the way you have, it is truly the greatest blessing to be invited so warmly into this family. My parents and I had a great time this weekend with Jim and Pam, it was more like catching up with lifelong friends than meeting new family. I also wanted to say thank you so much Debbie for posting those pictures, I really do have his smile! I cannot wait to meet all of you, and I apologize truly in advance for being so difficult in responding quickly- working six to seven days a week leaves me with little energy these days but I promise I will work on it:) If anyone wants to contact me for any reason at any time please do, I'd love to hear from everyone. My parents Chris and John are incredibly excited to meet you all as well, so whenever any of you make a visit to the shore, definitely let us know. Thanks again everyone!

Dinner with Lacey, Chris and John

Pam and I just arrived home from having dinner with Lacey and her mom and dad, Chris and John. They are wonderful people, both professionals, very easy to converse with. I don't think at this point I could pick better parents for Lacey. I am convinced God put them together.
They are excited to be grandparents as Pam and I are aunt and uncle.
Lacy has been working all she can and being pregnant runs out of energy after working all day and evening too. She explained that is why she has been slow to email everyone, but she will.
I can not wait until you guys meet her.
Love,
Jim

Tim and Lyn (undercover!)

Hi everyone! Welcome aboard Lacy! For Lacy's benefit, let me list who is in the pictures:

Clif and Eileen Laverty (Grandmom and Pop), Grammy Eileen (Great grandma) Lyn, Jim, Deb, Clif, Eileen, Rick, Tim. (In order of age) So your Dad is the baby in the pictures. I've also included some pictures of myself (your Aunt Deb) so you can see family resemblances. I figure everyone will be sending you pictures to compare. I'll email more if you want them. Pop had brown eyes, as do Jim and Clif. Grandmom, Lyn, Rick, Tim and I have blue eyes. Your Aunt Eileen won the prize: she has green eyes to die for! (Hey guys, I'm leaving out all of the Aunt and Uncle stuff to save my sanity!)

Lacy, I adopted a little girl named Lisa Marie, who was born Sept 84 so I'm sure your Mom and I can really relate to each other. Feel free to share my email address with her. I can't wait to meet you and share stories. My email is bkflyboysgirl@aol.com.

I hope the pictures don't scare you too badly!!!!!

Aunt Debbie

Ooops not all the pictures would fit, so I'll post this then add some more.
